Simply miraculous

Mark 1: 40-42

Forty-nine recorded miracles surround the life of Jesus, from the miracle of His birth to His death, resurrection and ascension. He delivered people from demons, He healed the sick, and He turned two loaves of bread and five fish into a meal for a hungry crowd of thousands. Most startling of all, He raised three people from the dead.

Jesus did these things without fanfare. They were a natural outflow of a life that is creative, constructive and compassionate. He has all power and authority, yet all His miracles are a mirror of His character, full of love and mercy.

Jesus’ miracles testify to the fact that He is the Christ, the promised Messiah. He is the God who created nature. Jesus still performs miracles today. Hebrews 13:8 says that Jesus is the “same yesterday and today and forever.” His character hasn’t changed. Thanks be to God!

Think about this quotation from a 19th century author and theologian, George MacDonald: “The miracles of Jesus were His Father’s normal miracles wrought small and swift that we might know them.” Do you agree? Is it unreasonable to expect that God performs miracles today given what you know about His character? Should we be surprised when miracles occur?

Consider: Mark 1: 23-26; Luke 7: 11-16; John 4: 46-54
